In the 1960’s, Tony Lock was one of a distinguished list of Surrey and England beneficiaries (including Peter Loader and Ken Barrington) that brought all star teams to Master Park for benefit matches against the local side.
One of these matches was particularly memorable, as Garry Sobers played as guest captain for Oxted and at least one current playing member can remember the great man launching a six into the British Legion across the road. *
Unsurprisingly, these games seem to coincide with the move from the Master Park Pavilion being a dry venue to opening a bar, which really started the modern era of fund raising. In 1968, thanks to much hard work from members and some generous grants, the new (current) pavilion was opened by Ken Barrington.
The first ever 3rd XI was formed the following year, and in 1971 Oxted commenced its League cricket life, by joining the Surrey County League. In 1989, Oxted joined the ranks of the second division of the Surrey Championship.
Limpsfield’s own cricket success before the merger in 2006 is notable, playing high standard Friendly cricket in the 1970’s and two spells in the highest division of the Surrey Championship.
The Master Park square and outfield were probably at their peak between 1987 and 2000, during which time, Surrey 2nd XI played 21 games there.
* Footnote : Since originally writing the paragraph about Sir Garfield, I have been contacted by Richard Oats, now living in Spain, who writes
"I played in that game but I do recall Gary Sobers hitting what was to be his penultimate ball from Roger Harman of Surrey for a virtual straight six off the back foot which landed on John Lawrence’s car, which was parked just to the left of the pavilion as you looked at it. Gary Sobers was out the next ball to Roger Harman and I had to follow him with the “commentator” offering me the opportunity to do the same, doubtless for pennies! Roger Harman said he tossed it up to give me that opportunity but forgot not to spin it. I was thus caught in the gully for a golden duck with the ignominy of that long walk back following Gary Sobers’ 99. "
Editor's note. Gary Sobers autographed the dent in the Roof of the Car . Class Act.
