Oxted & Limpsfield Cricket Club has included in it's teams many players notable for their performances in notable Sports.
EC Bambridge (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Bambridge) was an English footballer who made eighteen appearances as a left winger for England between 1879 and 1887, being appointed captain twice.
He was one of three brothers who played for England, still the only such family to hold this honour.
He was one of the first "stars" of the England side who was an extremely fast winger. Throughout his career he was known as "Charlie Bam".
He scored 11 goals in 18 appearances for England with an average goals per game rate of 0.61.
The 1911 Census shows Bambridge to be living at Cecil Lodge, Granville Road, with four sons, all of whom also played Cricket for Oxted.
Pages 20-23 of the Oxted Cricket Club Centenary Handbook tell us more about this famous ex-international – who played Cricket for Oxted until the outbreak of the Great War until he was 56.
His sons also played for Oxted CC and it is worth noting that from 1899 until 1937 there was a Bambridge in the Oxted team.
In 1912 (vs Roving Friars) and in 1913 (Reigate Priory) Charlie Bam and his son were responsible for taking all the opposition wickets.
Two of his sons, Rupert and Frederick, were killed in France during the First World War.
Featuring in the adjacent 1904 picture another famous ex-Corinthian FC Footballer WU Timmiss who scored 119 against Reigate Priory in July 1904 (page 21 Oxted Centenary Handbook). It is worth noting that CD McIver in the same picture, was a former pupil of Hazelwood School and and would almost certainly have appeared for Limpsfield Cricket Club.
More recently, Leslie Brown (b 1936, d 2021) had a distinguished Amateur career with Dulwich Hamlet and Wimbledon FC. Les represented Great Britain at Football in the 1960 Rome Olympics and made 8 Appearances for the England Amateur team, scoring 3 goals.
